United Hmong Southwest Minnesota
The purpose of the organization is to create economic opportunities, preserve cultural identities, promote educational aspirations, foster a healthy lifestyle, elevate community engagement, and uphold family values among the Hmong people in the Southwestern area of Minnesota. We strive to ensure that our elders are well cared for and our children can succeed in achieving their goals. We also aim to share the Hmong culture and arts, while engaging and enriching the broader Southwest Minnesota community.

Create Economic Opportunities
We look to create economic opportunities by investing in education, entrepreneurship, and community development. Launching small businesses, such as traditional crafts, farming, and culinary ventures, can reflect our cultural strengths. Youth programs and leadership initiatives can also help the next generation develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in competitive markets.
Preserve Cultural Identity
The Hmong people are deeply committed to preserving their cultural identity through language, traditions, and community engagement. Elders pass down oral histories, spiritual practices, and folk art such as embroidery and music, ensuring younger generations stay connected to their roots. Cultural festivals, like Hmong New Year celebrations, serve as vibrant expressions of heritage and pride.
Promote Educational Aspirations
The Hmong community places a strong emphasis on promoting educational aspirations as a pathway to empowerment and opportunity. Families often encourage their children to pursue higher education, viewing academic success as a means to honor their heritage while building a brighter future. Community leaders can offer mentorship, scholarships, and culturally responsive programs to help students navigate the challenges of school and college.
Foster Healthy Lifestyle
The Hmong community is increasingly focused on fostering healthy lifestyles by blending traditional wellness practices with modern health education. Many families emphasize the importance of balanced diets rooted in fresh, homegrown ingredients and herbal remedies passed down through generations. Leaders can promote physical activity through cultural dance, sports, and outdoor gatherings, while also encouraging regular medical checkups and mental health awareness.
Uphold Family Values
The Hmong people place deep importance on upholding family values, viewing the family unit as the cornerstone of cultural identity and social strength. Respect for elders, intergenerational support, and strong kinship ties are central to daily life and decision-making. Traditions such as clan gatherings, ancestral ceremonies, and communal caregiving reinforce a sense of belonging and duty.
Elevate Community Engagement
The Hmong community aims to enhance community engagement by promoting collaboration, civic participation, and cultural pride. Through local events, youth programs, and leadership initiatives, Hmong individuals can build bridges across generations and cultures, thereby strengthening communal bonds. Through community advocacy and representation, we can get involved in decision-making processes that affect our neighborhoods and communities.
