2026 Hmong New Year Celebration

Hmong New Year Celebration holds deep cultural, spiritual, and community meaning for Hmong Americans. At its core, it represents renewal, cultural preservation, and connection to ancestors and community.

The celebration is a powerful way for us to maintain our identity and heritage and bridge the gap between generations, helping younger Hmong Americans learn traditions, values, and history.

It is also a time when families honor ancestral spirits, practice spiritual renewal rituals, and reconnect with cultural roots that come from China to Laos and to the United States.

In the United States, the Hmong New Year celebration revolves around the following three main objectives:

  • Cultural Preservation — Celebrating the New Year helps Hmong Americans pass down language, clothing, music, dance, and customs to younger generations, ensuring that traditions survive in the diaspora. Southwest MN is our home, and we want to ensure our culture and traditions are preserved and shared as part of history.
  • Community Gathering — Large festivals in larger cities like St. Paul and Fresno bring together thousands of Hmong people to socialize, reunite with relatives, and strengthen community bonds. These gatherings help maintain a sense of belonging far from ancestral homelands. Even though Southwest MN might be small, our hearts and souls believe in community support and building; it can happen here, as well.
  • Spiritual Renewal — Rituals such as soul-calling and honoring ancestors help families reconnect spiritually and symbolically begin a fresh year. These practices remain central even in American homes, ensuring respect for our ancestors, restoring balance and spiritual being, and inviting a New Year with luck, strength, and harmony.
